Picture of stylish open-air sculptureFor a taste of modern Malaysian art galleries in Penang, the Universiti Sains Malaysia Museum and Gallery features continuously changing art exhibitions and hosts varying cultural events most months.

Also of note is the Yahong Art Gallery, which can be found within Penang's northerly fishing village of Teluk Bahang and close to the beachfront. Visitors to the Yahong Art Gallery will find an array of antiquities and art works, with many local scenes painted by Malaysian artists, along with various souvenirs and gifts. Particularly popular are the paintings depicting scenes of villages around Penang, along with the island's beautiful coastline and flora.

Yahong Art Gallery

Located in a fine setting surrounded by swaying palm trees, a traditional Malay village and the Batu Ferringhi beach, the privately owned Yahong Art Gallery features the work of famous Malaysian batik artist Chuah Thean Teng and his three sons. Many of the works are for sale, while a souvenir shop is also on the premises.

Universiti Sains Malaysia Museum and Gallery

The Universiti Sains Malaysia Museum and Gallery is located within the campus of the island's very own University of Science, Malaysia, which is home to almost 30,000 students. This particular museum contains an extensive exhibition relating to ethnographic and performing arts, and features various art works created by local Malaysian artists, including pieces by some of the students themselves.

The Art Gallery

Sited in Georgetown and always popular with tourists, the Art Gallery is home to a large and interesting collection of paintings, created by a number of prominent Malaysian, Indonesian, Chinese and Singaporean artists over the past 100 years. Along with the gallery's permanent collection, a temporary display changes several times a year, while seasonal exhibitions are also staged on a quarterly basis. Most paintings have a distinctive oriental flair and feeling.
